like I said my name is Caitlin Crawford my family we Josh is my husband and we just celebrated our daughter's first birthday this summer which is really fun and crazy I stayed up way too late cuz I was wanting it to not happen so yeah but we really loved I'm sure your kids will get to know Amaya via videos and cute little pictures that I'll show off during the day as well Hobbies I like to do anything outside anything science related or taking apart things or anything that has to do with coffee and I think my father-in-law's a coffee expert and stuff so yeah all of that kind of fun stuff my favorite subject is definitely science as you'll probably see and your students will find out like space and I love everything about it and I love admit one more person so you guys will get to know me more throughout the year hopefully through volunteers and field trips and whatnot but also your kids for sure you'll get to know me through them as well curriculum so in language arts I'm just going to kind of go through these really quick and we can Circle back around if you have questions at the end so for Kendrick K5 we use wonders curriculum which is pretty popular some of you I'm sure you've heard of it and we also use Spalding phonics which is a teaching tool for how to teach kids to read and it really breaks down the pieces of reading into almost like into almost like a math concept of looking at reading or you're adding these text together so it's works really great as a whole but also it's one of the best tools to use for kids that are struggling readers and it really helps to get everybody elevated on track so we we love it and we found it to be very successful for all students so yeah we you have work books leveled readers we have a few different online resources that we use they'll this year will get to do more cohorted like reading groups cuz the kids will get to be able to rotate to things so we'll get to do reading groups together and obviously if the kid needs more help or just need some extra teacher. I'm reading one on one is something I really love to do as kids we also use the Lexia which I don't know if those of you who are returning will be familiar with it but if your new it's an online kind of Ra mean in language arts program that's really set up to help and engage kids they love it they have little reward levels that they passed and they follow those and we do little bar near reward things as the kids passed levels and they get their really motivated by it so that's really fun into social studies we use a curriculum studies weekly and it's looks like a little newspaper that I get and the kids get hard copies of it so they look through it looks like a little newspaper is really cute but it also goes through a lot of different leaders or stork events or holidays things like that so that's a weekly curriculum we get a magazine every week we also implemented a like twice and what's 30 or two times a month. Be a particular leader either current or historical for example this first month of school will be studying John Muir because we start we do like science journal similar to how he did and then the next month we'll talk about to new leaders or Community people who were just really engaged in that Community I also do a character and Community Ed Haitian just kind of how to be kind what is that look like how to take care of we have three stains we go we talked about is being kind to your community to your environment into yourself and then we really that's kind of our language for the year okay was this being kind to your community not really owe you threw your trash on the ground was that being kind to your environment not really in an do you were there's something dangerous or unsafe is that being kind to yourself until that language we use all year and it really helps to refocus kids to like I don't like I have to take ownership and of current being kind and that looks different given the situation yeah and then also field trips will engage social studies through different field trips which we will get do you again this year talk more about that a little bit later so social studies are moths we use a curriculum called my mama and it implements the common core standards which I know can be a trigger word for some people I love Common Core I can teach it well I cannot get kids engaged while I also can support parents well and it really helps kids to have depth in math but we do recognize there is it's not pendulum swing you know so it's great that our kids have deeper Concepts in math through Common Core but we missed out on some of that speed that comes with just memorization it's a lot of us grew up with like you just memorize the facts you don't have to understand them just have to know I'm kind of a staying so we recognize that whole and that Gap and so we have a few programs that we Implement to make sure we're hitting all of those things too kids are best prepared in their math skills going forward so the curriculum also has lots of Hands-On lessons manipulatives yeah one of the online programs we use is called Tema which I really love because it has no language involved so pretty much it's there's a penguin if you're not familiar with it and they just have to get GiGi across through these various public schools that will be that will involve math concepts but there's no words involved because often we find in a lot of math programs there's like a lot of reading involved so it hinders kids that may struggle with reading now they're going to struggle in math as well because they have to read to access the math curriculum so that's one thing I really love the first things first grade because some kids just need time to read and and they'll be you know struggle for portion of the year and I know just click and milk and so that math program helps them still access the math curriculum in those Concepts while they're getting there already practicing the other program it. I don't have on here cuz I just was informed about it is called Reflex Math and that's like like I was saying the memorization Windows math facts really quickly so that program will help us hit that as well give them lots of practice again these are very like kid oriented games a lot of them want to go home and play them after school which I might go outside if it's not Smokey and then but yeah the kids love them and we try to make sure in our classroom. It doesn't become a chore you know why I try to make sure nothing becomes a chore but yeah science we are stem school that means science technology engineering and math science how we integrated in our classroom we just have we have units and lessons that I do with the kids throughout the year like I said prior it's kind of in a monthly unit set up so we'll talk about John Muir and we'll talk about General like how to write a science how to make science observations and write that down or how did you will learn about the ocean I think is our next unit and we'll go through everything we do will be integrated around this science unit of the ocean like that will do in the classroom they also get to go to a lab specific science class with mrs. witherow twice a week and then obvious mod Field Trips Again that will be what do the planetarium hopefully I really like to do Shasta Caverns at the very end of the year so there's just a few field trips that again will go along with our science curricula and units that were doing in the classroom as far as engineering ghost we use what's called Project Lead the Way their kids basically a classroom kits with engineering that our group projects that was kind of put on hold or adjusted last year but I'm really excited to dive back into those and get kids working together in groups that I think that's so important and just a word world we live in right now is very the workplace is looking for more collaborative people that know how to adjust lead but works together and lead in a group and to be problem-solvers and be social problem solvers so yeah I'm really excited to get them back into doing group project so also with engineering they get to go to Makerspace two times a week with mrs. kefir I think the first few she'll come into our room just to kind of get them into some procedures and then she'll shift back over and again we do integrated class activities around engineering won't build random will do Rube Goldberg machines if you want to deal with some stress just Google YouTube some Rube Goldberg machine videos it's very satisfying so they'll get to build in a group some of those which that will be some conflicts so it'll be but they get to work together and build those little things from the satisfaction of seeing it like workout is really fun to see the kids do that so yeah we'll have our own activities with you as well I lost someone having back in I'm so that covers curriculum before I move on just to discuss field trips we are like I said doing field trips this year that's the plan going forward what if you were wanting to drive on a field trip or let's say if you were to come in and volunteer which is still iffy at this point you would all get fingerprinted through the office you go up to the office there's a form I think it's a salmon-colored form and that tells you how to get fingerprinted and how and it's like a driver's application you have to do that before driving our staff has to do that every year so even if you were on it last year you have to get back on the approved Driver's list this year it's just something our insurance requires and it just keep our kids extra safe Zone yeah but at this point we will be having a jog son to fundraise and then also and we will be having field trips back again this year I'm going to continue speaking of that school-wide safety protocols and procedures we are doing masks indoors when other people are present frequent hand-washing contact tracing so when we're out I mean right now I wear my mask out such as well but so when we're indoors we're wearing masks when we're outside even launched at the playground between classes that the kids don't have to wear a mask at pick up things like that so if we do go on a field trip it is required that we wear masks on the field trip as well regardless indoor or outdoor just because they'll be that would be a exposure point if there was outside of our campus just because you know sometimes other classes are their field trips from other schools as well so just so you're aware but that overall is the main covid procedures at this point classroom Behavior accountability clip chart actually you can see it's kind of back there everyone starts on green and they just move up and down throughout the day they can move around as much or as little as they based on their day and their behave I have some kids that are really consistent and so they're just like either Don green or blue all day most days it goes so green and then go to work in my best so green blue purple are the positive and then if they were to move down below green it says slow down and then think time so those are just just to just to kind of give a the kids are like oh I need to say I have them physically do it I don't move the clip they move it because it's their behavior that's causing the clip to move and usually there's some kind of depending if the kid ends like a break going up to recess a kid moves down to Yellow but then I moved back up to Green there's no they don't owe me anything at recess time but let's say they move down to Yellow they're not able to really bring it back then fellow made like a minute or a couple minutes or something based on where they end up on the chart and I always give them the option to either they can sit for their time or they can do we have a grass on the playground we have a plot they can do if they don't want to sit they can do or two laps around the grass and then some of them a walk and eat their snack or whatever someone will run so they get it done faster but they always have that option as well so they can be moving still during their recess weekly treasure box and so in order for them to earn treasure box on Fridays they have to stay on the positive green blue purple side of the chart most kids do cuz if they were let's say they get down to read before law there's always time in the day to redeem that and move up to green or blue you know so a lot of kids turn it around there's always there's always a chance for Redemption that's what I like to have them get in that mindset of and then we do specific character education and application kind of a little bit along the lines of what I was talking about was social studies just what it looks like to be a leader on campus and our classrooms and our families in our city and how our Behavior actually says a lot about how we would lead if we're going to be in leadership or yeah so that's that staying connected I'll pause here this is my email my school email and then this is my school extension phone number and extension number it's really easy 111 and I have a Google form that I have for you I'll be sending or actually that I'll have you guys still out just telling me about your student what nickname they go by just what goals you might have for them what were crazy my half an hour to this year just so I can get to know them a little bit I know it's Monday but if you could get that to me before the first day of school that would be helpful otherwise it's fine I'll get to know you kids as well but if you could do that at point on it really helps me to have be able to look through be like oh okay free look at some things and also to get it's hard because we're not having a lot of FaceTime ourselves as adults so it's better to have some I'm going to refer back to it so I can know your kid from your point of view as well so I have that posted In Bloom which leads me to our class app so if you have Art phone there's an app called blooms otherwise it's on the computer as well it is for my classroom pretty essential for parent-teacher communication it's used for one-on-one communication I can message you directly through that and vice versa I put announcements on there any documents I sent home I know they might come home in like 500 pieces in their backpack I need to be ironed or something I put all things that I send home a digital copy in that as well when we do parent-teacher conferences the sign ups for that will be in blue and if we were to transition distance learning it really makes for a smooth transition for that as well because that's something we always have to be thinking about in the this point in time we're in so yeah. really essential soda sign up I have I'll try to do it on this I'll send this home as well the first day of school the main thing is it can you see this do I need to zoom in a little bit more if I can do that stop better set the same hard cuz I can't see him so you download the app if you're new and you just click join and you'll enter this code here this highlighted code it's g m p 5 J M I'll say that again our classroom code is gmp5 jme and so that will notify me that you're trying join I'm I think it'll ask you to put in your name what your students name is and you can if you don't want to do the online or the app version you can just do it via text as well and you'll just that same code to this number here 1858 blooms one but so this is what the app looks like though it has this blue be boxing so I also post pictures so again with covid X you're not in the classroom if you were like would want to be volunteering I post lots of pictures of what the kids are doing or some of their if I have some some work that I didn't get to send or something I sent you a specific picture of that or something like that so it keeps you really connected to the classroom without having to physically be there so it's it works really well it's set up kind of like a social media feed it's close to just are the people that I let in so yeah that is it I feel like I had something else to add where's my note pickup time pick-up and drop-off will be different from last year if you were here actually it'll go back to the way it was two years ago which none of you were here for unless you have siblings so we will all all classes will line up on specific lines out in the front of the office so that's where you'll go to pick up your kids and to drop off but the first day of school will be out there and you'll drive through they'll be two lines and we'll put kids in cars when you're between the two crosswalks so those cars that are between there's four cars at a time we're putting kids in cars so you won't have to drive all over the school I like a scavenger hunt to get your kids this year so
